Moonlight:
Rating 9/10
The 2016 Oscar-winning film starred Mahershala Ali, Trevante Rhodes, Naomi Harris, Jharrel Jerome and Daniel Monet. It followed the primal stages in a young boy’s life: childhood, adolescence and adulthood. He goes through some of the hardest issues in life, such as emotional and physical abuse, which in the end, correlates with his identity and sexuality.
The first time I saw this movie, I was in complete awe. It was able to grasp the emotional connection between the characters and the audience very early on with its cinematography. I can see why it is said to be one of the best films of all time.
The structure of the film is what makes this story so unique. It begins with a section titled “Little,” where we meet a young black boy who goes by Little and is found by Chiron (Mahershala Ali) abandoned in a crack house located in Miami. He instantly takes him under his wing because his mom is on the streets and forms a relationship that changes his life.
Part 2 is titled Chiron, which flowers Little throughout his teenage years. This is when he starts to get into many fights that eventually get him expelled from school. The passing of his mentor also is what deteriorates his well-being and willingness to be a good kid. However, this is also one of the pivoting moments where he experiences his first sexual encounter with a childhood friend Kevin.
The last segment is labeled “ Black,” which is the nickname is was given while selling drugs out in Atlanta. This is where we meet Trevante Rhodes, who did a phenomenal job portraying this character. He reconciled with his mom and finally came back home to Miami when Kevin Called. They reminisced about the time they shared when they were younger and revealed their feelings for one another during that time.
